About the NSDFI

In 1994 when Nigeria qualified for the very first time for the World Cup, a committee with members from each state of the federation was set up by the Federal Military Government to raise private funds to manage a successful outing at the mundial..

Chief (Dr) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu was made the chairman of the committee. The committee had people like Chief Barnabas Gemade, Mr Ray Ekpu, Princess Simi Johnson, Group Captain Lawan Dangaji, Prince Yemo Adeyera, Dr Ayodeji Ayo-Bello.

Others include Alhaji Garba Ubaliyo, Sir Anthony Oshienebo, Dr Ben Anyene.

The committee raised funds. They funded the preparations of the Super Eagles that went on to win the 1994 African Nations Cup in Tunisia and did well in the World Cup. Upon return, the government extended the life of the committee to fund the preparation of the nation for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Immediately after a worthy display and collections of medals in what has been he nation’s best Olympic ever, the government mandated the committee to incorporate the Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc in 1997 with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

After the incorporation, 13 of the members were elected to serve as the Board of Trustees (BOT). They have jealously guarded the institution which they built in their own ways to greatness.

Ever since, the NSDFI has played very silent but prominent roles in the sports development sector. With a rejuvenated NSDFI, we have taken up new mantles of responsibilities.
